The transgender and gender non-conforming network was formed in September 2023 after discussions with the University about needing a safe and welcoming space for students who are transgender, gender non-conforming, or questioning. Organised by the LGBTQ+ student volunteer officers Dax and Elena, they wanted to make sure all students had a community here at Aberystwyth.
The Network has four main aims:
- Provide social spaces for transgender and gender non-conforming students to meet each other and enjoy their time at Aberystwyth.
- Provide information on the Students Union and University with relevant wellbeing resources.
- Run events and workshops to educate the wider community on trans inclusion and liberation language.
- Provide a platform for transgender and gender non-conforming students to effectively feed into and influence the decision making of Aberystwyth Students Union.
The Network is free to join and welcomes all transgender and gender non-conforming students as well as those questioning and allies coming to support a friend.
A note from our LGBTQ+ Officers Dax and Elena:
"Our hope with this transgender and gender non -conforming network is to help bring the queer people in Aber closer together. We want to support as many people as we can on their gender journeys, regardless of how they turn out. I also personally want this network to act as a place people can come to for help for all gender related troubles. Self-exploration and turbulent political times can make it hard to know where to get support. Hopefully having an established community can make that easier for all of us!"
