🥾 Tomen Y Mur (EN)
- OVERVIEW -
We're headed out to Tomen Y Mur on Sunday, February 16th, to take a path back in time to the attempted Roman occupation of Cymru. This hike should also give us a lovely view of the local reservoir, and the nearby disused nuclear power plant. It will be around 12.2 km, with 175m of elevation gain.
- DETAILS -
We'll begin by following the path along the banks of Llyn Trawsfynydd. Breaking away from the water, we'll trace through farmland, up to a disused quarry. From there, we will follow where the roman road was, eventually reaching the site of the amphitheatre (or ludus), and the more solid forms of the former roman life.
Tomen-y-Mur was, in its time, one of the most complete military sites of Agricola's occupation of the island. Burial mounds, a temple, a mansio, and the previous mentioned aspects are all thought to have inhabited the space at some point. Most noticeable are the motte, where a wooden bailey once sat, and the still intact roman walls. This area is also thought to have been where Mur Castell (best known from the fourth branch of the Mabinogi) was. The history of the area also includes the supposed Norman occupation of the area by William Rufus against the uprising of 1095.
From there, we'll pass by the parking lot, along another bank of Llyn Trawsfynydd, and to the viewing platform with information about the decommissioned nuclear power plant. We'll then head back to the bus, and back to Aberystwyth.
- TRANSPORT-
We will be taking the mini bus. There are no toilets at the carpark, but if it's absolutely necessary, there are the carparks in Coed-y-Brenin, which we will drive through. We'll meet at the Lidl Carkpark at 9:00, leaving at 9:15, and the drive should take between an hour and an hour and a half, dependent on traffic. We'll be parking at a small public carpark next to Magnox Trawsfynydd Nuclear Power Plant. Working off the assumption that we start the hike at 10:30, it should take us between 3.5 to 4 hours. At the latest, we should be back in Aberystwyth at 16:00.
