BUCS End of Year Roundup

Over the past year, we have experienced some outstanding successes with a cumulative 66 BUCS wins throughout our teams. Within the university's vibrant sports scene, several clubs emerged as standout performers, leaving a lasting impression with their remarkable achievements.

In Badminton, both the Men's 1st team showcased their prowess with an impressive 8 victories, the Men’s 2nd team totalling 6 and the Women’s 1st team achieving 2 victories combining for a total 16 victories across the teams! Their performances were marked by precision, agility, and strategic play, solidifying their positions as formidable opponents in the league. The depth of talent within these teams was evident in every match, with each player contributing to their success on the court. We caught up with the Badminton 1st Captain to discuss this achievement, here’s what they said “I'm really proud of how all our teams have performed this year. The Men's 1st team have been unbeaten in the league (they must have had a great captain), Men's 2nd have come 2nd place only to us, and of course we have to talk about the women's team who got runners up in the conference cup! Bangor got destroyed by all 3 of our teams as usual. It's fantastic to see our self-taught training pay off.”

The Women's 1st Netball team illuminated the court with their exceptional teamwork and strategic prowess, clinching an impressive tally of 8 victories with the 2nd team bringing the total wins for the sport to 10! Their cohesion and skill is impressive and we look forward to seeing what they can achieve next year. We spoke to their 1st and 2nds Captains to discuss this impressive feat. Here’s what the first team captain said: “After a long hard season of netball, I could not be more proud of our team. Everyone has improved leaps and bounds and we have become not just closer as a team but as great friends. We gave blood, sweat and tears and proudly came out on top of the league for the 2023/24 season.”. To come at the top of their league is a hugely impressive level of commitment that we are incredibly proud of. We also spoke to their second team captain about the club's achievements. “I am so proud to have captained the seconds this year, they have gone from strength to strength with each game we’ve played. Having begun the season with some close games and tight losses, the team has worked together tirelessly to build and grow into one of the best second teams that AUNC has seen in years, with some spectacular wins under our belt.”

Football within the University has also done very well this year, accumulating 6 wins between the Women’s and Men’s 1st teams. We spoke with Michelle, the Women’s Football President about this year's successes “This season has been amazing from the team. After being promoted to a higher league from last year and staying up, while also becoming familiar with the new teams and getting to know each other has been an amazing experience… As a club we have grown not only in terms of numbers but as players, and it is very exciting to see how the club will continue to grow through the years. This success proves that there is a place for women in football to play with the same levels of respect and opportunity as any other group.” We are incredibly proud of this consistent progress within the Women’s Football club and look forward to seeing them expand further in the coming years. We also caught up with Men’s Football, here’s what they had to say about the season “Just like any other year we knew it was going to be tough. We had a lot of setbacks with injuries but everyone gave 100% and we were able to remain in the division that we’re in and of course beat Bangor for the 3rd year in a row which gets sweeter every time.”.

All of our teams have given so much to their sport this year, and this commitment does not go unnoticed. We look forward to seeing what everyone can do for the 24/25 season, we’ll be rooting for you!
