Hi, I’m Dafi and I’m the Welsh Culture Officer and UMCA President!
You may or may not know that today is ‘Shwmae Su’mae’ day in Wales, let me give you some background…
Welsh culture is very important for us here in the University, Students’ Union and Wales, and an essential part of this is the Welsh language. Welsh is an extremely old language which has faced challenges over the past century but is currently on the up!
Shwmae (pronounced shoe-mai) or Su’mae (pronounced see-mai) (meaning how are things, in both a South and North Welsh accent) is one very popular form of greeting in Wales.
The day exists to encourage everyone to start a conversation in Welsh, but more than that to raise awareness an understanding of the Welsh language and its importance.
So go on, give it a go! Start all your conversations with Shwmae Su’mae today!!
