Over the next few weeks, we would love to take the opportunity to reintroduce our Undeb Aber staff team!
Spotlight on Lucie Gwilt – Head of Student Opportunities
Where is home?
I grew up in a village called Guilsfield, near Welshpool in Mid-Wales. After living in Aberystwyth since University, I’ve recently moved back and regularly commute for work.
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m a very busy person who doesn’t like to be sat still for too long. Outside of work and family life I like to play sport and volunteer my time with local clubs and organisations. I am very passionate about developing women and girls sport and making sure it’s accessible for all. I have recently been elected as an FAW Councillor; representing the women’s football game in North Wales, which has given me an excellent platform to influence the game from another level.
It’s your last meal on earth…what’s on the menu?
I love spicy food; Thai and Indian specialities particularly. I’d be very happy with a King Prawn Pad Thai or Chicken Tikka Madras as my last meal!
Outside of work, what are your favourite pastimes or hobbies?
Aside from spending time with my family, and in particular my young daughter, Libby, I am an active person who loves sport. I play a lot of football and enjoy long, daily walks with my dog, Cooper.
What do you love about working in Aberystwyth?
I love the relaxed atmosphere in this town; it’s great for your wellbeing, especially after a busy day in work.
If you weren’t in your SU role…what would you be?
I’m a qualified Primary School teacher (I did my PGCE in Bangor *ssh*) so probably would be teaching.
What part(s) of your job do you enjoy the most?
I love organising and delivering our Key Events, e.g. Aber Challenge, Superteams, Varsity and Aber7s – they take a huge amount of dedication and hard work as a team, but it’s always great to see that work pay off when we see students enjoying themselves and receive positive feedback.
Before working here, have you had much involvement with the students’ union or student groups?
I am an Aber Alumni (graduated in 2012) and during my time in Aber I was President and Women’s Captain of the Badminton Club, so I was relatively engaged with the Students’ Union through my committee role.
AberSU is… a place where students’ can help to shape their time at University, but more importantly, enhance their student experience through student group participation and fun events and activities!
AberSU is not… A BAR!!
Summer isn’t ‘quiet time’ for Students’ Unions…what are you going to be busy working on over the Summer?
Summer is our opportunity to really get ahead of the new academic year. We are currently delivering our annual committee training and getting clubs, societies and volunteer projects prepared for Welcome Week and beyond come September. We are also working hard on the initial preparation for some of our Key Events for 2024-25 which we hope will continue to be a huge success.
