What’s the best memory that you have from running for election and/or your time as an Officer?
Can't think of anything specific, but it was the general sense of being empowered to actually do things and make a difference there and then. Especially compared with the speed that I saw the University worked through it's committee system, it felt like we were really getting things done!
What do you think you learnt from running in an election and/or being an Officer?
That I had the skills to actually get things done. Teamwork, Public speaking, problem-solving - all of these had to be sharpened quickly if you wanted to get stuff done.
What advice do you have for anyone thinking of standing for election?
Do it! I'd worked on the Courier and helped set up Bay Radio, so I knew the Union and how it worked, which certainly helped. Get involved at any level, especially somewhere like Aber, where there's a real 'can do' / 'have a go' attitude.
How has your time as a Full time Officer impacted your career?
After I finished, I worked for the University for a couple of years in widening access, and because of that experience, I then moved to Swansea to train as a teacher. I think I owe a huge amount of the last 20 years to those two years as a Sabb in Aber.
Five words to sum it all up?
Brilliant, Empowering, Amazing, Life-affirming, Life-altering
