    Volunteer Caseworkers are the lifeblood of SSAFA, supporting a growing number of people in need of financial, practical and emotional support. Clients come from all backgrounds and age groups and may have served in WW2 or in a more recent conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan. Our trained volunteers listen without judgement to assess and provide tailored support to help people navigate life in and beyond military service. We need you to join your local SSAFA team to help us achieve this.
     

    What does this role involve?

    • • Contacting clients and arranging to meet them at a mutually convenient time
    • • Meeting clients in person or remotely and completing a form to assess their circumstances
    • • Sign-posting clients onto local services providing specialist advice
    • • Applying on the client’s behalf to military and non-military sources of charitable funding
    • • Arranging for the purchase of goods and services
    • • Keeping in touch with the client so they know how their case is progressing
    • • Keeping in touch with your branch so they know your availability

    Volunteer Generalist Adviser

    Volunteering as a Generalist Adviser with Ceredigion Citizens Advice

    We can all face problems that seem complicated or intimidating and it can be difficult and stressful trying to work things out alone.

    At Ceredigion Citizens Advice, we have highly trained volunteers who are invaluable to delivering our service and helping people find a way forward with the problems they face.

    During 2020/21 Ceredigion Citizens Advice (volunteers and staff):

    • Advised 2,500 people
    • Dealt with 14,000 issues
    • Gained £1.7m in extra income for clients
    • Reduced debts by over £295k
    • Distributed £20k of fuel vouchers

    What will I get out of it?

    By volunteering with Citizens Advice, you will:

    • Make a real difference to people’s lives and have a positive impact on your community
    • Learn about a range of issues that affect our clients
    • Build on valuable skills such as communication and problem solving
    • Meet new people from a range of backgrounds – mainly virtually currently, though we do arrange ‘walks’, ‘coffee’ etc for any volunteer who is interested

    Who can apply?

    As a volunteer at Ceredigion Citizens Advice, you do not need any specific qualifications or experience, beyond a proficient level of Maths and written English along with basic IT skills. You will need to be friendly and approachable and have a respect for views, values and cultures that are different to your own.

    All applicants will receive consideration for a volunteer role based on capability and performance regardless of race, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.

    For applicants who are not UK citizens, please note that you are only allowed to volunteer if your immigration status permits it. Please do check that you are entitled to volunteer, to avoid breaching the terms of your status. You can find further information about different visa rules on this government webpage.     What training will I receive?

    As a volunteer you will receive an introduction to the service and full training for your role including the following areas:

    • Consumer
    • Debt

    You will also have support and supervision throughout your training and your time volunteering with us. Initial training takes up to 6 months, but after 5 weeks you could be advising via email alongside training. There are always opportunities for development, and many volunteers go on to apply for paid positions.

    What does the role entail?

    Our volunteers help clients online via email or video call, over the phone and face to face (currently not an option), to explore the issues that they need help with and find the information they need to solve their problems.

    A volunteer generalist adviser role involves the following:

    • Exploring the client’s situation and recording all details on our database, in line with Data Protection.
    • Empowering clients to find information themselves and/or to act, for example, to manage their money, pay their council tax bill or find a rented property.
    • Researching the situation and offering options to help the client resolve their issue, where they cannot do it themselves.
    • Signposting/referring where we cannot help.

    Student Solicitors

    Please note: For individuals who want to volunteer in advice giving roles, and who are also training to be a solicitor, if you started training to be a solicitor before 1st September 2021, you may be able to get up to six months reduction in your training contract. If you started training to be a solicitor after 1st September 2021, you may be able to include time spent volunteering in advice giving roles as part of (or all) your qualifying work experience.     Home visiting Volunteer

    Your role would be:

    To support people living with with a incurable or life limiting illness, by -

    • Sitting with client when the career needs a break ( there is no personal care given)

    • To take them out for a trip( perhaps brining them in to activities here at our base )

    POS system training-cashier, restocking, looking through donations and sorting them, providing customer assistance, setting up displays, steaming and preparing clothes etc .training provided.

    Make a difference in our local community by lending a hand in our retail shop.

    We are a friendly bunch, the kettle is always on and we are quite partial to cake! Tea and cake aside, we work well as a team of volunteers and everyone does their bit.

    Whether its sorting, steaming or selling, pricing, ebaying or arranging the window there is always something to do, and a day always flies by in the shop. Our shop stocks nearly new and high quality pre-loved garments and bric a brac.

    We are looking for enthusiastic, reliable and willing people, work either 3 hour half day or 6 hour full day (10am to 4.30pm). We put together a rota each month and we need people who can do a regular shift - which could be every week or couple of weeks.

    We are volunteer- based and are looking for people who may have an interest in joining the active sports team in their football coverage. We provide a weekly magazine show and at least one live game per week is covered in the Welsh men's and women's leagues. We broadcast in both English and Welsh and practice equal opportunities

    Most games are on Friday night or Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Broadcasts are in English and Welsh language, schedule depends on availability.

    Most coverage will be at Aberystwyth Town, Aberystwyth Town women, Penrhyncoch, Bow Street and Llanidloes Town. Other games can feature.

    What will I be doing?

    • Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering questions
    • Serving customers at the till

    • Maintaining high levels of shop standards, presentation and cleanliness
    • Generating add-on sales and Gift Aid conversion through high levels of customer service

We need you to help value our interesting donations in our shops to help turn them into cash.

    What will I be doing?

    • Researching interesting items online on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Abe Books to value them for sale in the shop
    • Enlisting help from local auction houses when needed
    • Working together with the shop team to identify and price high value items
    • Speaking with customers, making them welcome and answering queries
    • Promoting awareness of the charity and the services that we provide.

    What skills do I need?

    • It’d be great if you have some knowledge of or interest in vintage items, know what to look out for with brands, pottery marks, book publishing dates etc.
    • A really keen eye for detail and ability to cross reference items across a number of websites to provide the most realistic valuation
    • Ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
    • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team and customers.
    • Ability to use computer for research

     

    Whist this role will be mainly sitting at a computer desk, you may need to handle bags and donations from the public and there may be stairs to climb depending on which shop you are based in. If you have any concerns about this, please speak with the Shop Manager when expressing your interest in volunteering.  

    How much time do I need to commit?

    We’d need you to give around three hours per week if you can with the possibility to do more if you’d like to. However, we appreciate any time you’d like to give; please let us know this on your application form. All we ask is that you give the same hours each week and that you let us know as soon as you can if you’re not able to make it. This’ll help us to plan our week.

     

    What support will I be given?

    • Before starting with Tenovus Cancer Care, we ask that you do try a small number of hours in the shop so we can both see how the role may suit you. The amount of hours can be decided between you and the Shop Manager.
    • Following that the Shop Manager and team will be on hand to run you through the basics of helping in a shop in your first few days and they’ll always be on hand after that.
